Michael J. FitzGerald
Executive Vice President, Exploration and Production


Michael J. FitzGerald, 56, joined Toreador in late 2001 as part of the merger of Madison Oil Company and Toreador. He had been vice president, exploration of Madison Oil since 1992 and was one of the founders of the company.

Mr. FitzGerald’s oil-business career began in 1972 when he joined Texaco (now ChevronTexaco) as an exploration geologist in New Orleans. In 1975, he began work for Consolidated Natural Gas Corporation in Clarksburg, West Virginia, as an exploration geologist in the Appalachian region.

From 1976-1978, Mr. FitzGerald was an exploration geologist with the General American Oil Company of Texas, focusing on U.S. Gulf Coast activities.

In 1978, Mr. FitzGerald joined Dallas-based Triton Energy (acquired by Amerada Hess Corporation in 2001), an international oil and gas exploration and production company, as an exploration geologist. At Triton, Mr. FitzGerald was the chief geologist and exploration manager in Europe from 1981-1988, leading the exploration team in major French oil-field discoveries including the Villeperdue Field. From 1988-1990, Mr. FitzGerald served as Triton’s director of investor relations and corporate development until he returned to the technical side as manager in charge of frontier exploration from 1990-1991.

Mr. FitzGerald is a 1972 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor of science degree in geology. He is a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and a Certified Petroleum Geologist as recognized by the Division of Professional Affairs of the AAPG.
